Day 19 - Belgrade to Katerini, Greece
Day 19 was another mainly travel day. I met Ivan and Desa, owners of the apartment where I stayed, in the coffee bar near the apartment for a coffee before Ivan drove me to the airport (for 20 euros) but it was nice to not have to think about getting there.
The flight from Belgrade to Thessoloniki was a straight up and down - 50 minutes and yet the train would have taken all night if it was running straight through. Once at Thessoloniki it was easy to get a cab to the train station, although the cabby told me that I would be better going by bus to Katerini as they are more frequent and slightly quicker. Hey ho - I had my ticket and I was going to use it, particularly as I had splashed out a whole 12 euros to go first class. The photo is of the first class carriage - haha graffiti has no boundaries!
The beach is in a place called Katerini Paralia, just outside Katerini - 10 euros in a taxi from Katerini Station.
Well, I thought I was going to a sleepy little Greek fishing village - oh how wrong could I be! Paralia is a very popular seaside resort for weekenders from Thessoloniki and Macedonia and is a typical bucket and spade place. Saying that, the hotel is lovely, looks new and is right on the beach.
Hot from the travelling I had a quick shower and then headed out to walk the street (literally - not the other meaning!) to find a nice little Taverna for dinner and I found a gem - on the beach and it had gridled Sardines and a decent wine.
Here’s some pictures:
As all’s I’m going to do is relax for the next 3 days I’ll just do an amalgation of days 20 through to 23 on Tuesday as there is unlikely to be anything of interest happening - if it does I’ll let you know.
