Day 27 - Ebiking round Athens
OMG what a great day!
I had booked an ebike tour for yesterday of all the classic Athens sights but when they processed it through Trip Adviser and then Solebikes they were fully booked. They sent me an email and asked if I could defer to today and they would up-grade my booking to a sights and flavours tour (an hour and a half longer and you get lunch) - ever flexible and anything for a free lunch, ‘of course’ I said. Well am I glad I did.
Let’s get this straight, I’ve always thought ebikes were not for proper cyclists and, as I have a well good road bike, count myself in the recreational cyclist group. Oh but never to disrespect ebikes again, I love them. A couple of times I forgot to switch the bike on after a stop and boy oh boy can you feel the difference, particularly on the hills and there are a few of those around Athens, I can tell you!
So getting back to the tour and past my ebike envy (might have to get one back home), two great guides and they had mics and earpieces so ongoing commentary as we rode past places and, being an officenado on tours now, this was the first tour that gave us time to explore sights as we stopped; Andreas and Alex waited and guarded the bikes whilst we went off and had a good old look around. There seemed to be no rush which was fab. Also we got to do a few tasters as we went around and also had a picnic in one of the parks. Not forgetting this was a tour, we saw all the sights of Ancient Athens - so the ticket I bought the day before I might as well have torn up as Andreas did them all (except the museums and up the top of Acropolis). This tour was well worth the full price let alone the discount Kostas (the owner) gave me (by the way he also helped me a lot with taxi as gave me the name of Kyriakos who was amazing at ferrying me around -lovely man we had really good chats about world affairs and brexit - I’m thinking he was more than a taxi driver in previous life (shirt and tie brigade).
This ebike tour was pretty much my full day as even in 30 degrees of heat, it was tiring. So a little wander back to my apartment, cold shower, and out for dinner was about as much as I could muster. For dinner I went to God’s Restaurant (noted as one of the best places to eat in Lonely Planet and Trip Adviser, so I was keen to try it); don’t waste your money, no better than loads of the restaurants around as far as the food is concerned and as a single women they really weren’t interested in me. Big tables and they’ll pull out all the stops and dance around them with attention, but poor ol’ me sat for about 15 mins being ignored. So me and God need a few words, he has to get his act together with the service - water into wine and fishes into loaves is old hat!Gods Restuarant
